Safari-to-Go: The Icon FJ40 and Campa All Terrain Trailer
![]()
While we normally dedicate this weekly slot to our Weekend Getaway column, we thought we’d try something a bit more “choose-your-own-adventurish” this week. Namely, we think you’re due for an excursion not bound by the conventional– its time you found some of your own frontier off the beaten path. The destination is entirely yours to be chosen, we’ll just do our part in recommending the transport. If we were embarking on a safari of our own, we’d do so in the Jeep-eater itself, the Icon FJ40 and its ultimate accessory, the Campa All Terrain Trailer. Continue reading, GearCravers, for more on the Safari-ist’s tools of the trade by TLC Icon. Let no rock, stream, hill or valley stop you.
Buy: from $90,000 ($170,000 w/ trailer)
When it comes to customizations, Porsche has Ruf, Mustang has Saleen and the Toyota Land Cruiser has its own independent custom rebuilder– TLC. The TLC Icon is a custom rebuild from the classic Land Cruiser chassis, using new parts based on the original design, but pushed to the maximum for performance. While the original land cruiser performed quite well off-road like its Jeep counterparts, the Icon is an absolute beast.

While the original Land Cruiser used a 3.9 liter engine which produced 125hp (and later, a larger 4.2 liter engine) the Icon FJ40 has a 5.3 liter fuel injected V8 engine pushing 350hp standard. Optionally, Icon buyers can select a 450hp 5.7L V8 or a 2.8L Turbodiesel which is biofuel capable (and can achieve 25-30mpg). It is around this power that Icon develops its Land Cruiser-based custom off-road vehicles. Add a winch, some interior upgrades, gas tanks and spares, you’re off-road ready in no time.
