GM Issues 2011 Chevy Cruze Recall to Inspect Steering, Transmission
General Motors has issued a recall for more than 154,000 models of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, due to issues with the steering shaft and automatic transmission, the auto giant said on Wednesday.
GM will check the cars to ensure that the steering shaft and auto transmission shift linkage have been installed properly. The issues came to their attention when customers continuously brought their auto transmission cars in for service, and when a Cruze driver lost control of the steering wheel in a parking lot before stopping safely.
The high-volume recall represents all of the cars built at the Lordstown, Ohio plant from summer 2011 through this April, when changes were made to correct the issues.
A few weeks ago, a YouTube video of a broken Cruze steering column forced GM to recall 2,100 cars. The automaker believes that both that video and this more recent steering issue are isolated incidents. The transmission issue has caused some cars to display Park when the Cruze is still in gear.
The fuel-efficient Cruze is one of GM’s greatest successes since receiving government recovery loans in 2009. The auto transmission Cruze is listed at 36 mpg highway, while a less-popular manual option lists at 42 mpg. GM says the inspections should take about an hour.
